Course outline

Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu’s Amateur Architecture Studio in Hangzhou represents a thoughtful and considered response to the rapid contemporary urbanization of China. Amateur Architecture Studio’s approach privileges the directness, intimacy and handcraft found in humble buildings above the technological production that is the hallmark of much recent work. The Studio’s projects employ landscape responses, spatial organisations and material qualities that resonate with China’s long history and explicitly challenge the placeless and graceless presence of many recent ‘international’ projects.

This course is based on Wang Shu's presentation at the 2012 National Architecture Conference: experience.
